Introduction to Studio Recording Certificate Course

This immersive four-session, hands-on certificate course, which is conducted over consecutive Saturdays in September, introduces students to the fundamentals of modern audio recording in a professional studio environment. Designed for beginners, the course covers both hardware and software workflows with a focus on Pro Tools, industry-standard recording equipment, and microphone techniques.

Course Overview

Over four compact days (4 hours/day), students will learn how to:

  • Understand signal flow and audio fundamentals
  • Use recording software (Pro Tools) for tracking and editing
  • Identify and place microphones for vocals and instruments
  • Record live instruments and vocals with proper gain staging
  • Engineer a full-band live session in a professional studio setting

What Students Will Do

  • Set up and manage sessions in Pro Tools
  • Record voice, guitar, bass, piano, and other instruments
  • Work with various mic types and learn placement techniques
  • Gain hands-on experience recording solo artists and full bands
  • Review and analyze takes to improve their ear and technique

Final Outcome

  • Tracked and recorded a full band
  • Created, managed, and edited sessions in Pro Tools
  • Learned professional mic techniques and studio practices
  • Built a foundation for home recording or studio internships

At the completion of the course, participants will also be awarded a certificate.
