MACON, Ga. -- Plans are in the works to celebrate the rebirth of Macon's iconic Capricorn Records.

Mercer University President William Underwood will join former Allman Brothers Band member Chuck Leavell, Co-Founder of Creek Media Wes Griffith and Co-Founder of Rock Candy Tours Jamie Weatherford on Monday to announce details of the studio's reopening as Mercer Music at Capricorn later this year.

Just in time for the studio's 50th anniversary, according to a press release from Mercer University, a two day series is planned for December 2nd and 3rd, which will include live music and tours of the renovated studio. Those details will be announced at Monday's press conference in addition to a status update on the construction process.

The building is 20,000 square feet and will be a fully restored recording studio, which will include an extra and larger studio for orchestral recording, live performances, 12 rehearsal rooms, offices, meeting areas for cultural organizations, businesses and more.

There will also be an area inside dedicated to the history of the Capricorn and its impact on Macon's music history with artifacts and exhibits. Capricorn is home to legendary Southern Rock artists like the Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band, Wet Willie, Elvin Bishop and more.

Redwal Music, which was owned by Mercer alumnus Phil Walden, his brother Alan Walden and Otis Redding, purchased the building that would be named Capricorn Sound Studios in 1967.

Architects working on the project tell WGXA they're hoping the building will "take visitors back to another era."
